I've been challenged by two kinds of faith; faith in God and faith in myself.
Faith in God is real faith, where you'll go anywhere, do anything because He wants it. And you know its His will so for that reason you do it. That's the kind of faith that makes Christians grow.
But there is another faith, a false faith. Its faith in our own abilities and talents. We think that its "no longer necessary" to call out to God for help because we've been doing it so well for so long. This is faith in ourselves..kinda gross, huh?
We'll never admit it but its there. Don't believe me! Here's a way to test your faith in self:
Read Psalm 139:1-4, 16 - though the entire chapter is a good passage to read.
"O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You now when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it all...Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them."
The Lord knows all things we would do even before we were born through the day we will die. Even down to knowing when we would sit and standup, when we would speak and what we would say. He knows everything, including every step of our feet would take even before we could walk.
Something as simple as walking to work. He knew from the beginning of time where we will go today, who we will meet on the way, what will slow us up in arriving at our destination, and even knowing what will stop us in our path.
That means, no matter where we go, He knows everything about it. There isn't a direction we could take that He doesn't know well before we take it. He is basically incontrol of our path because He knew what we would face on the way and what will happen when you get to your destination. He even knew that you would stumble over which rocks, though no one else was even looking He saw it before it happened.
But when was the last time you took a step and thought about testing the ground? Maybe if it looks dangerous but most of our steps are done without a thought to them. The reality is that we've taken so many steps that we trust our experience.
When was the last time you asked God to help you walk from point "A" to point "B"?
*The challenge that the Lord gave me was to spend one day having more faith in His ability to keep me from falling through the ground than I had faith in my experience. Also to have more faith in His ordained interferences (people and problems) on my way than I had in my ability to quickly solve it so I could go on my way quickly. Believing by faith that He may have put that person there for something more than I could see. Humbly admitting/trusting that God has a reason for them to say what they said or do what they did for your good.
I don't believe we should take the time an pray for five minutes before we take one little step forward but that we begin our day with a prayer for His provision. Then live the rest of the day stepping forward with faith that He will answer that prayer.
Jesus said to those who were "faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, enter into the joy of your master."
If we could have faith in God's sovereignty over something as small as taking a step, then maybe when the bigger tests come, we would be ready for that great leap of faith that we have been praying that we'd be able to make.
Cool thought...I thought.
